Dental crowns and bridges are typically fixed solutions used to repair damaged teeth or improve the appearance of teeth. Unlike dentures, which can be removed, dental crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants. Only a dentist can remove a crown or bridge.

Crowns

A crown can be used to improve the appearance, shape or alignment of a tooth. A crown, typically made of either porcelain or ceramic, entirely covers or “caps” a damaged tooth and it can also be placed over an implant to give the appearance of a tooth-like shape and structure.

Dental crowns are often recommended to:

  • Cosmetically transform unsightly teeth
  • Repair a fractured tooth
  • Protect a weak tooth from breaking
  • Attach a bridge
  • Conceal a poorly shaped tooth or discolored teeth
  • Cover a tooth that has received a root canal
  • Cover a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
  • Attach to a dental implant

Bridges

A dentist may recommend a bridge to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge is created by using two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and filling in the space between with a false tooth/teeth. The two anchor teeth are called abutment teeth. Bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants that are used to anchor the bridge. Bridges supported by actual teeth are ideal instead of an implant when the supporting teeth are in need of a crown.

What are the Benefits of A Dental Bridge?

  • Replacement of missing teeth
  • Restore your smile
  • Restore chewing and speaking function
  • Realign your bite
  • Prevent movement of remaining teeth

Fixed Full Arch Implant

For anyone missing all of their teeth on the upper or lower jaw, a fixed full-arch implant prosthesis may be an alternative to dentures. A fixed full-arch implant prosthesis requires careful planning and coordination before the process ever begins. This dental solution involves placing multiple implants in the gum that will securely attach to a custom-made prosthetic. This is a permanent solution that offers a very natural feel and look. This type of solution is also called a Hybrid Implant Prosthesis, meaning that it is a cross between a bridge and a denture.

Why would I need a dental crown?

Crowns are used to repair and strengthen damaged teeth or improve the appearance of teeth. Crowns are made of porcelain or metal, or a combination of both materials, and each type having advantages and disadvantages. The crown essentially covers the entire tooth by becoming its new outer surface. Crowns are cemented to the tooth and are meant to be long-term solutions. However, crowns often times need to be replaced if not cared for with proper cleaning. Dr. Breckner and his staff will advise and show you how to maintain your crowns in order to keep their longevity.
I have missing teeth and want to improve my appearance.
Most often dentists recommend either dental implants or a bridge to fill an area left by a missing tooth or teeth. An implant replaces the missing tooth root on which the implant crown is attached. A bridge is a false tooth that is attached to and supported by adjacent teeth. Each of these solutions for replacing missing teeth have their own indications. Dr. Breckner educates his patients so an informed decision can be made for which is best for you.
